Raúl Fernando is a Baltimore-based photographer, videographer, and music producer known for his editorial fashion commercials and fine art photography. He has produced and assisted on advertising campaigns and portraiture for clients including Furtif, KWAX, Nosu.io, and The Washington Post. With a deep passion for visual storytelling, his work blends personal narrative with cultural exploration, often focusing on the immigrant & hybrid identity experience in America. Through his images and films, he seeks to shed light on diverse communities, redefining identity and belonging in the modern world.
In addition to his commercial work, Fernando has experience in the film industry, having worked as a grip on numerous film sets and speculative advertisements. This behind-the-scenes role has deepened his understanding of lighting, camera work, and the technical aspects of production, shaping his ability to capture cinematic moments through still photography and film. He is also known for his experimental work, particularly his liquid light paintings, alternative black-and-white processes, and innovative studio lighting techniques. These approaches push the boundaries of traditional photography, creating unique, ethereal images that challenge the viewer’s perception of light and texture.
Committed to fostering artistic dialogue, Fernando envisions creating a fashion film website and, in the future, a residency space where artists and journalists can collaborate, drawing inspiration from the ethos of the Robert Rauschenberg Residency. Currently pursuing a BFA in photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art, his academic journey continues to inform and enrich his practice. As his work evolves, he explores personal history, cultural identity, and the intersections of art, technology, and society. Through his photographs and films, Fernando pushes the boundaries of visual storytelling, questioning the future of human creativity in an increasingly digitized world while striving to create work that is both visually captivating and thought-provoking.
